CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- With the days ticking down to Christmas the Southern Illinois AIDS Coalition is running out of time to sponsor hard hit families for the holiday.
"Some of the most impoverished families are often affected by HIV and AIDS," LeGina Crim, VP of Finance, for Southern Illinois AIDS Coalition said. "It's important to come together as a community and uplift those individuals."
The coalition now need your help to sponsor 10 low income households from Jackson, Johnson, Saline, Franklin, Gallatin, Wayne and White Counties. Some families have 6 members, half have children under 18, but all have an experience with HIV and AIDS.
Monetary donations help the family with food, electricity, gas and presents for the kids.
"Getting them to a place where they're sustainable is so important," Crim said. "Making sure kids needs come first like clothing, socks in some cases food. And the children do enjoy gifts."
The coalition sets them up with programs to address their HIV/AIDS medication needs. Many of the funds they would have raised this year at fundraisers were impacted by coronavirus restrictions.
The Coronavirus disease itself has been especially hard for those with the immune compromised disease. According to HIV.gov the risk for people with HIV getting very sick is greatest people with a low CD4 cell count, and those not on effective HIV treatment (antiretroviral therapy or ART). Severe illness from COVID-19 is defined as hospitalization, admission to the ICU, intubation or mechanical ventilation, or death.
"It's been my experience that in a lot of cases people are genuinely so appreciative they are so grateful. Especially with COVID going on, human contact makes all the difference. With HIV and AIDS individuals and dealing with a global pandemic like COVID-19 it makes all the difference with someone just being there and being present," Crim said.
