Though veteran Rockets forward P.J. Tucker refused to consider the Rockets’ lack of preparation time, given their unusual circumstances, coach Stephen Silas said there is a long list of issues he would address in practice if the Rockets had one.
The Rockets, limited to nine available players because of NBA health and safety protocols, testing and an injury, had not held a full practice in a week before playing the Denver Nuggets on Monday.
Silas said there was so much to address that Monday’s game-day shootaround was almost a practice, though while still trying to preserve legs for players who played in excess of 40 minutes on Saturday in Portland while the Rockets’ rotation largely was limited to seven players.
“There’s a long list, actually, of things I’d like to kind of get to," Silas said. “We haven’t yet. (Sunday) we weren’t able to practice because guys are dead. I want the guys to have their best for the games. Sometimes you have to be smart as far as how much you have them on the floor, how much you’re practicing.
“We did a shootaround on the floor. We had a very detailed walk-through as far as the defensive concepts. All of those defensive concepts were things we kind of hit on during training camp. But we didn’t have our full group, and we didn’t have time, and we’re trying to get guys in shape. Today’s shootaround was almost like a practice where we’re introducing concepts.”
Now Playing:
The Rockets expect to have a practice with Eric Gordon, John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins back on Wednesday. They had held a light practice Dec. 22, the day before they expected to have their season opener. The Rockets have had so little practice time, Silas was not sure which assistant coach, Jeff Hornacek or DeSagana Diop, would have stepped in as a 10th player.
“Sagana’s younger, but Jeff has the experience and the Finals games and All-Star appearances,” Silas said.
“It is my nature to be patient, but it’s not any head coach’s nature to be completely patient, especially when you’re trying to get your stuff in.”
Tucker, however, said there is no reason not to be ready.
“Not difficult at all,” he said. “It’s our jobs to play basketball. This happens. Guys go down with injuries, guys go down for being sick, guys go down for family issues. You miss guys all the time. It just makes it next man up. It’s an opportunity to go out and play.
“The first game, you saw that. Everybody came in very, very well-prepared, a game we should have won with only eight guys. There’s no difference in preparing for this game with preparing for any other game with everybody going out there, prepared to win.”
