Utah freshman RB Jordan dead

Ty Jordan, a star freshman running back for the University of Utah football team who grew up in the Dallas area, has died, school officials announced. Authorities in Texas and Utah have not released details about the circumstances of the Jordan’s death. A day earlier, the 19-year-old Jordan, a 5-foot-7-inch, 200-pounder, was named the Pac-12′s Newcomer of the Year. “Words cannot express the devastation and heartache that our team is feeling right now upon learning of the tragic death of our teammate and brother, Ty Jordan,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement . . . Elijah James blocked Massimo Biscardi’s 42-yard field goal attempt in overtime to give No. 23 Liberty (10-1) a 37-34 victory over No. 9 Coastal Carolina (11-1)  in the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl in Orlando, Fla. Liberty took the lead on Alex Barbir’s 44-yard field goal on the first extra possession. Coastal Carolina got a huge break in regulation when Liberty’s Joshua Mack fumbled inside the 1 with 41 seconds left in the fourth quarter to end a long drive . . . Trey Ragas scored on a 1-yard plunge with 7:16 left and No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette (10-1) beat UTSA (7-5), 31-24, in the First Responder Bowl in Dallas. ­The Ragin’ Cajuns drove 72 yards in 12 plays for the winning score after UTSA overcame a 24-7 second-half deficit to tie it. UTSA offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. directed the Roadrunners after first-year coach Jeff Traylor twice tested positive for COVID-19 this past week and didn’t accompany the team . . . Redshirt freshman quarterback Cornelius “Quad” Brown threw for 226 yards and three TDs to lead Georgia State (6-4) past Western Kentucky (5-7), 39-21, in the LendingTree Bowl in Mobile, Ala. . . . Miami quarterback D’Eriq King will return for another senior season, taking advantage of the NCAA rule that essentially gives all college athletes another year of eligibility in response to hardships caused by the coronavirus pandemic. King has thrown for 2,573 yards and 22 TDs for No.18 Miami (8-2), which plays Tuesday in the Cheez-It Bowl against Oklahoma State (7-3).

Corey Kispert recorded career highs with 32 points and nine 3-pointers, leading the No. 1 Gonzaga men’s basketball team (7-0) to a 98-75 romp over 16th-ranked Virginia, the most recent NCAA champion, in Fort Worth, Texas . . . Marcus Sasser scored 19 points and Caleb Mills delivered seven of his 12 points in the closing minutes to help sixth-ranked Houston pull away to a 63-54 victory over Central Florida in Orlando. The Cougars (7-0, 2-0 AAC) overcame cold shooting by holding UCF (3-2, 1-1) to one field goal over the final 8:50 to remain unbeaten and deny the Knights a second win over a Top 25 opponent in a week.. . . Miller Kopp scored 23 points, Boo Buie had 14 and Northwestern beat No. 23 Ohio State, 71-70, in Evanston, Ill. Pete Nance added 10 points for the Wildcats (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten), who won their fourth straight. E.J. Liddell led Ohio State (7-2, 1-2) with 15 points. Kyle Young added 14 points and Harvard transfer Seth Towns, a transfer from Harvard had 11 for the Buckeyes, who had won two straight and four of five . . . Ayo Dosunmu scored 30 points, Kofi Cockburn added 15 points and 15 rebounds, and No. 18 Illinois (7-3, 3-1 Big Ten) beat Indiana (5-4, 0-2), 69-60. The game was close until about midway through the second half, when Dosunmu hit three consecutive 3-pointers to fuel Illinois’ 14-0 run.

Team USA blasts Austria

Matthew Boldy had a hat trick and Trevor Zegras scored twice in Team USA’s 11-0 victory over Austria in the world junior championships in Edmonton. The Americans, who outshot Austria, 73-10, improved to 1-1 in Group B play after opening with a 5-3 loss to Russia on Friday night. They will face the Czech Republic on Tuesday. In Group B’s first game of the day, Sweden beat the Czech Republic, 7-1, for its 53rd straight preliminary-round victory. In Group A, Dylan Cozens had a hat trick and three assists and defending champion Canada opened with a 16-2 victory over shorthanded Germany, which played only 14 skaters after nine players tested positive for the coronavirus . . . Gunnarwolfe Fontaine scored his first two collegiate goals and added an assist to lead the No. 11 Northeastern men (3-1-1, 3-1-1 Hockey East) to a 4-1 win over host Vermont (0-3-0, 0-3-0) . . . The Chicago Blackhawks and center Carl Soderberg agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract, bolstering the team’s depth after it lost Kirby Dach and Alex Nylander to injuries. The 35-year-old Soderberg, a former Bruin, had 17 goals and 18 assists in 70 games for Arizona last season . . . The Coyotes traded veteran center Derek Stepan to the Senators for a second-round pick in the 2021 draft.

ManU, Leicester battle to draw

Leicester came from behind twice to draw, 2-2, against Manchester United and stay ahead of its opponent in the Premier League. Bruno Fernandes looked to be sending United to its seventh straight away win when he scored in the 79th minute, moving onto 10 goals in his first full season in the league. If the visitors had held on, they would have jumped above Leicester, but Jamie Vardy met a cross from substitute Ayoze Perez with a shot that was drifting off target before deflecting into the net off the outstretched leg of United substitute Axel Tuanzebe in the 85th . . . Gylfi Sigurdsson produced a Merseyside top two in the Premier League by scoring a late goal for Everton in its 1-0 win over last-place Sheffield United. Everton jumped into second place above Leicester and Manchester United, after their 2-2 draw . . . Manchester City climbed to fifth in the Premier League standings with a routine 2-0 win over Newcastle, thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres. Torres, a winger, was playing as the lone striker in the absence of Gabriel Jesus — who has contracted the coronavirus . . . Powered by 19-year-olds Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka — and a 20-year-old in Emile Smith Rowe making his first Premier League start this season — Arsenal beat Chelsea, 3-1, and lift some of the gloom over embattled Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta at Emirates Stadium . . . Jim McLean, the Scottish soccer manager who led Dundee United to its only domestic league title in 1983 and the European Cup semifinals the following year, has died. He was 83. The cause was not disclosed.

Texas Rangers sign Arihara

The Texas Rangers signed Japanese pitcher Kohei Arihara, a 28-year-old righthander who spent six years with the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, to a $6.2 million, two-year contract. The Rangers will pay a $1.2 million posting fee for Arihara, who went 8-9 with a 3.46 ERA in 20 starts for Hokkaido in a pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He led the Pacific League with three complete games and second in innings with 132 . . . Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco broke a bone in his right wrist playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic. The Pirates said the wrist will be immobilized and Polanco, 29, is expected to be 100 percent by the start of spring training.
