Bon Jovi's New Album Marks A New Low Point For The Band - Forbes

Bon Jovi’s latest album Forever was promoted heavily before it arrived less than a month ago. The band’s leader Jon Bon Jovi did an incredible amount of press, tied both to the release of the set, as well as a new docuseries about the group. All that attention helped the new project debut high on the charts…but then it suffered a very unfortunate fate.

Forever launched at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. It instantly became the band’s fourteenth placement inside the top 10 on the ranking of the most-consumed albums in the U.S. In its first tracking frame, the set moved 50,000 equivalent units. Then, all of a sudden, the title was gone.

Bon Jovi’s full-length didn’t manage a second week on the Billboard 200. The title fell from No. 5 to somewhere below the No. 200 position, which is a massive and very disappointing tumble down the most important albums ranking in America.

Forever now stands as Bon Jovi’s first proper studio album to manage just one week on the Billboard 200. Only one other release from the band, Inside Out, was forced to deal with the same fate. That title, however, only peaked at No. 196, and it was a live album, so its performance shouldn’t necessarily be considered comparable.

It’s not odd for new releases from lesser-known musicians to start lower on the Billboard 200 and then disappear. But for a group as well-known and beloved as Bon Jovi to do so—and with a title that was promoted so intensely and for so long—is unusual. It shows that longtime lovers of the group rushed to pick up a copy and stream the effort the moment it was available, and then interest dried up within a matter of days.

Forever also earned just a single stay on both the Top Rock & Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts. It did spend two frames on the Top Album Sales list, however, but it’s already gone from that ranking as well.

While Forever may have disappeared pretty quickly, Bon Jovi isn’t absent from the Billboard charts. Their Greatest Hits: The Ultimate Collection is still present on a number of tallies. This frame, it declines to No. 151 on the Billboard 200, after shifting more than 9,300 equivalent units—so clearly there is still interest in the group’s older material, if not their newest release.
