A new NBC News poll revealed that interest in the upcoming election has dipped to its lowest level in nearly two decades, with only 64 percent of registered voters having a high level of interest in November’s election.
The poll results indicate a decline compared to previous NBC News polls conducted at this time in the 2008 (74 percent), 2012 (67 percent), 2016 (69 percent), and 2020 (77 percent) presidential elections.
According to NBC, the lowest-ever level of high election interest in the poll during a presidential cycle was in March 2012 — at 59%.
The poll, which surveyed 1,000 registered voters, also asked participants who they would vote for with former President Donald Trump as the Republican candidate and President Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate.
Trump held a narrow lead over Biden by 2 points, with 46 percent to 44 percent — a decrease from Trump’s 5-point advantage in January, which stood at 47 percent to 42 percent.
Fifty percent of participants also said that Trump is being held to the same standard as anyone else regarding his multiple legal challenges, and 43% believe he’s being unfairly targeted in these trials.
The poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points and was conducted from April 12-16.
