Ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines launching new destinations at Boston's Logan Airport
A potential merger between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines ended last month after a federal judge ruled against the combination. Now, Spirit Airlines appears to be launching its most aggressive expansion of service at Boston's Logan Airport. Spirit announced plans to add five additional nonstop destinations to its route map in Boston this summer, with flights to Chicago O'Hare, Columbus, Detroit, Kansas City and Pittsburgh. Flights to Chicago, Columbus, Detroit and Pittsburgh will begin on June 5, while service to Kansas City begins on July 10. The routes are in addition to the airline’s previously announced new service from Logan Airport to Charleston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Norfolk, all scheduled to begin next week.Spirit says each route will have daily nonstop service, the airline said. In January, a federal judge blocked JetBlue from buying Spirit, saying the proposed $3.8 billion deal violated antitrust law. Last month, Spirit announced that its merger agreement with JetBlue has been terminated "by mutual agreement."
