Dua Lipa is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet right now, and she’s in the beginning of an incredibly exciting period. The Grammy winner is working toward releasing her third album Radical Optimism next month, and she recently doled out the project’s latest single.
That song, “Illusion,” arrives on one Billboard chart this week, but its entry is not especially impressive. In fact, Lipa’s single starts shockingly low on one of the weekly tallies, but this is just the beginning for the tune, and big things may be in store for the title.
“Illusion” debuts on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart this week, the ranking of the top-consumed tracks in the U.S. that Billboard classifies as either dance or electronic–or usually both. On that tally, Lipa’s latest launches at No. 42.
Below the top 40 on a genre-specific chart is an unusual starting point for someone as famous and successful as Lipa. The fact that “Illusion” doesn’t make it to any other tally is also very surprising, but there’s a good reason for what appears to be a lackluster performance from one of the top stars in the business.
“Illusion” was released on Thursday, April 11, at some point in the middle of the day. That was the final day in that tracking period, as a new one began on Friday, April 12. The song only had a few hours in which to rack up streams and sales, helping it reach the Billboard charts.
The vast majority of albums and songs are released very early in the day on Friday. The tracking week for the Billboard rankings begins again every Friday, so it benefits musicians to have as much time as possible for their latest offerings to be consumed before they impact the weekly tallies the following frame.
With only a few hours of activity, “Illusion” still managed to perform well enough to stand out as one of the most-consumed dance tracks in the country. A No. 42 debut on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart would normally be considered very disappointing for someone like Lipa, but taking into account the situation, it’s actually even a little impressive.
Next week, when Billboard refreshes the charts again, there’s a very good chance that “Illusion” will make a much greater impression. It will almost certainly climb on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs ranking, perhaps shooting toward–or even into–the top 10. The same cut will also likely reach a number of other lists, such as the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs, and Hot 100 lists.
