A low-flying Douglas DC-8 jetliner zig-zagging over Central California is a NASA research plane, KCRA reported.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the TV station reports the NASA plane has been spotted making passes between Palmdale and the Central Valley. On Wednesday, the DC-8 took off around 8 a.m. from Palmdale Regional Airport for research flights in the area. According to NASA's website, the jet was reconfigured to become a "flying science laboratory."
The plane has a "suite of sensors and data systems" that help scientists study weather patterns, wildfires, Earth's atmosphere and more. Onboard, the plane can hold up to 45 people and 30,000 pounds of scientific gear. You can keep track of the plane's flight path via FlightAware.
