The UK’s most-prolific child killer Lucy Letby could spend life behind bars at a prison where inmates can go shopping, pet baby animals and decorate cells pink.

The neonatal nurse, 33, who was convicted of seven murders and six attempted murders, will likely serve her sentence at HMP Low Newton in Durham.

Letby was sentenced to a whole life order at Manchester Crown Court yesterday as she looks set to join other inmates at the top security prison.

Despite previously including Moors murderer Myra Hindley and Cromwell Street killer Rose West as inmates, Letby could get the chance to pet sheep and goats.

The Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB) revealed the scheme in a report released last year.

The prison also has a resident rabbit and two birds which are looked after by inmates.

The IMB noted that petting the animals had a “calming effect” on even the most “challenging” of prisoners.

HMP Low Newton is just a stone’s throw away from HMP Frankland where ex-Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens and serial killer Levi Bellfield are also behind bars.

The closed female and young offender prison could see Letby have access to the Rags to Riches clothing shop.

Inmates can also personalise their cells provided they are kept in the general population wing.

Images from HMP Low Newton showed cells with pink towelling and beauty products.

Letby was originally held in HMP Bronzefield in Surrey but was subsequently moved to HMP New Hall in Wakefield for the trial.

However, the 33-year-old will likely initially spend her time at HMP Low Newton’s segregation unit due to the heinous nature of her offences.

The area can hold up to three women and facilities afforded to other inmates.

HMP Low Newton is also home to the so-called Primrose Project.

The scheme is designed to treat female inmates with “dangerous and severe personality disorders”.

No other women’s prison in the United Kingdom is believed to have such a unit.

An inspection report on the jail revealed: “Cells were not well equipped with only a bed, toilet and sink.

“The regime was limited with only an hour a day in the open air and half an hour to complete daily tasks, such as showering.”
