Sorry, Eddie Cochran: there is a cure for the summertime blues. The rock band All Time Low is dropping a Willamette Valley rosé that beats the heat and anything else that gets in the way of a rocking good time this summer.
All Time Low is Alex Gaskarth, Jack Barakat, Zack Merrick and Rian Dawson. The four Maryland high school friends made a rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale come to life by signing a major record deal before they even graduated in 2006. The gold and platinum record-earning foursome are now looking to climb the wine charts with their new “Summer Daze” Rosé.
On their way to Los Angeles for the recent 2021 Billboard Music Awards, All Time Low detoured to Oregon to check in on their new wine project. While their song “Monsters” didn’t take the award for top rock song of the year, their partnership with Anthony van Nice at Real Nice Winemakers in Dundee is a definite winner.
Van Nice is Real Nice Winemakers’ co-founder and managing partner and the president of Soléna Estate in Yamhill. Real Nice Winemakers specializes in using fruit from top local vineyards to make reasonably priced wines like the Black Magnolia Pinot Noir and Shallow Seas Rosé.
Real Nice Winemakers also has a private labeling program where clients without a winery can develop their own brands. That’s what brought All Time Low to Van Nice’s Dundee doorstep.
Gaskarth, Barakat, Merrick and Dawson are no dilettantes when it comes to wine. The band turned 15 years of touring into a graduate course in the great wines of the world. They embrace the “wine geek” tag like it was a nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In 2018 they took their wine passion to the next level with a trio of their own California wines.
“It was a proof of concept for us, to see if we could do it,” Gaskarth said in a telephone interview.
Gaskarth says that while he was happy with the California wines, he wanted more.
“I’ve always been a fan of the Old World, especially French wines. But, in terms of style, we wanted to get closer to what speaks to us in the wine world,” Gaskarth said.
The band looked to Oregon for their next step.
Introduced by the band’s management team, Gaskarth says he instantly hit it off with Van Nice.
“He took us seriously and shared our vision. He was willing to let us be more ‘hands-on,’ which is important to us. We don’t want to slap labels on wines we had nothing to do with,” Gaskarth said.
The pretty and pink “Summer Daze” goes on sale on June 8, 2021. Even though there are only 350 cases available, it is worth fighting off millions of All Time Low fans to try and snare a bottle or three.
The 2020 “Summer Daze” is a blend of pinot noir, pinot gris, riesling, pinot blanc, Müller-Thurgau and gewürztraminer from a handful of Willamette Valley vineyards.
“We like adding aromatic white varieties to boost acidity and aromatics. We like the floral perfume they can express, even when served ice cold,” Van Nice said.
I put the “Summer Daze” to the test by serving it at a temperature that would make a penguin shiver. It passed with flying colors.
The first sniff from the glass turned up perfumed scents of lilac to go with bursts of strawberries, lemon and tart nectarines. The “Summer Daze” is light on its feet, with plenty of bright acidity to balance the heaping helpings of raspberry, white peach and tart cherry fruit flavors. Traces of lemon verbena and spearmint pop up on the finish.
I highly recommend sharing this rosé with the stars, a beach blanket and a loved one this summer.
If you miss out on the “Summer Daze,” don’t worry. All Time Low hopes to return to Dundee this fall to experience harvest while working with Real Nice Winemakers on a red wine.
Has this positive wine experience placed thoughts in Gaskarth’s head about building or buying a winery in Oregon? “We have always loved playing here. Oregon is like a little cradle for us. So yeah, it is very possible I might end up living here one day,” Gaskarth said.
Until then, you can catch All Time Low on the upcoming Sad Summer Festival tour or at Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park. The band also plans to play the Roseland Theater in Portland this fall.
