MLB insider names ‘low-cost’ trade targets for Yankees’ Brian Cashman - NJ.com

Yes, you read the headline correctly. The words “low-cost” and “Yankees” were used in the same sentence.

Such is the life of general manager Brian Cashman, who’s adhering to owner Hal Steinbrenner’s desire to keep the payroll under the luxury tax threshold.

So that puts Cashman in an interesting spot. He needs to find an outfielder after losing Aaron Hicks, but he can’t spend a lot of money.

With that in mind, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand went bargain shopping to find low-cost outfielders for Cashman to target as the July 30 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

If you’re looking for a true low-cost outfielder, Michael A. Taylor (who is owed about $1 million through the end of the season) seems to be the ideal fit for the Yankees, who are in need of help in center field. ... David Peralta of the D-backs, who has roughly $11 million remaining on his deal through 2022, doesn’t play center field, but he’s a professional left-handed bat, which the Yankees could also use. Ditto for Corey Dickerson (who is owed about $4.5 million through the end of the season) of the Marlins.

If Cashman is given permission to spend, Starling Marte and Ketel Marte (no relation) become viable options.

Feinsand notes Starling Marte “is owed about $6.5 million through the end of the season” from the Miami Marlins and will be a free agent following the World Series.

Ketel Marte is in the midst of a six-year, $31 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. According to Spotrac, Marte will make $8 million in 2022. His deal also includes club options for 2023 ($10 million) and 2024 ($12 million.)
