Derek Chauvin sentencing: What time, how to watch, live stream, what to expect - NJ.com

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is being sentenced for his role in George Floyd’s death on Friday.

Here is what you need to know about his sentencing trial, how to watch it and what to expect out of the judge’s decision.

The sentencing for Chauvin begins Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. EDT (1:30 p.m. CDT local time in Minnesota).

The sentencing trial will be livestreamed through the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s YouTube feed, but broadcast networks such as CourtTV will also be carrying live coverage of the sentencing.

NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, and the CW have all designated time slots beginning around the 2 p.m. hour to dedicate to “local programming,” meaning it will be news coverage dedicated to the Chauvin sentencing, according to TV Guide.

Chauvin was convicted in April of second-degree murder and third-degree murder, as well as second-degree manslaughter in connection with George Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020.

At the time, Floyd, a Black man, was handcuffed in the street while Chauvin, a white man, kneeled on his neck for nine-and-a-half minutes while Floyd said he could not breathe until he went unconscious.

Chauvin was one of four officers making an arrest for an alleged forgery at the time. Chauvin and the other officers were fired from their jobs and were charged.

Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill is in charge of sealing Chauvin’s fate Friday afternoon. Prosecutors have recommended that Chauvin receive 30 years in prison while the defense is recommending a sentence of time served and probation.

Because the former Minneapolis cop had no prior criminal history, the recommended state guidelines for sentencing are 12 1/2 years for second-degree murder.

But last month, Cahill ruled in favor of prosecutors who had said there were four aggravating factors in Floyd’s death that would lead to a longer sentence.

Those four aggravating factors were:

  • Chauvin’s abuse of his position of authority and trust with people
  • His cruel treatment of Floyd
  • His committing the crime in the presence of children
  • The fact that Chauvin did not act alone

Most legal experts are expecting Cahill to deliver a sentence closer to the prosecution’s guidelines than the usual state guidelines of 12 1/2 years.
