Pediatrician says social interactions, sleep and exercise key to monitoring screen time for children - WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) -- It's no surprise that children are spending more time looking at a screen since the pandemic started. A New York Times article stated that screen time doubled in May 2020 compared to May 2019. The biggest contributor to the extra time is virtual school. Whether it's looking at a computer, tablet or other device -- it's extra time that wasn't the case pre-pandemic.

Dr. Megan Moreno, an adolescent medicine physician at UW Health, says it's not so much about tracking screen hours -- it's making sure your kids are still getting enough sleep, exercising and getting social interactions while they're on screen.

"The type of interactions using screens that are closer to what it would be like in real life, being able to have ongoing communication. Some kids are doing a lot of Roblox and doing a lot of creative gaming to get together," said Dr. Moreno.

Moreno not only suggests using a media use plan, but creating screen-free alternatives with activities like puzzles, cooking, reading and daily walks to give kids (and parents) a break from screens.
