Re “Trump Smears a Protester, 75, Hurt in Buffalo” (front page, June 10):

A quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln goes, “I would rather be a little nobody than to be an evil somebody.” When President Trump falsely accused 75-year-old Martin Gugino of being an antifa member and staging his own fall, he hit an all-time low and embodied the worst kind of bully. Not only did he hit a man when he was down — a man recovering from a head wound in the hospital — he attacked a white protester who was injured risking his life in the name of justice for black men and women.

At 75, Mr. Gugino is in the high-risk population for Covid-19. His friends and neighbors describe him as gentle and kind; had he witnessed somebody bleeding on the ground, he would have rushed to their aid. He absolutely would not have disparaged them on Twitter with sinuous lies to tarnish their name. Only an evil somebody would do that.

To the Editor:

The amount of protesters across America is staggering. While George Floyd’s murder was the trigger, the underlying cause is that people under 40 are worried about climate change, pollution, the widening gap between rich and poorer, and the current mess our democracy is in.

In my 90 years I’ve observed some terrible things, but the future for our young generations is bleaker, and they sense it.

Re “Effects of a Delayed Colonoscopy” (In Brief item, Science Times, June 9):

I turned 50 last October and visited my doctor shortly afterward. He congratulated me on this milestone and gave me a list of vaccines and tests to have done. I scheduled my first colonoscopy for mid-January.

I have no family history of colon cancer and was not worried, except for the prep part, which I had heard was onerous. Turns out the prep and the test were easier than anticipated. A week later I got the news that a polyp discovered during the procedure was malignant. A week after that, I had surgery to remove a foot of my colon.

I am fortunate to not (yet) need any further treatment. The surgeon said the doctor who advised me to have the test saved my life. I disagree; I saved my own life by scheduling the colonoscopy.

Please get your colonoscopy, now.
