Syracuse, N.Y. – Unless they live in Hawaii or Arizona, the only two states that don’t observe daylight saving time, Americans will “spring forward” on Sunday, March 14, setting their clocks ahead an hour.

But fire officials say there’s one other thing that everyone should do on March 14 no matter where they live: Change the batteries on their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

“During a fire, smoke and fire spreads quickly and every second counts,” said John P. Farrell, president of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. “Smoke alarms play a vital role in reducing home fire deaths and injuries. Everyone in the house should know how to reach the closest exit if they are awakened by the smoke alarm.”

Homeowners with alarms that have sealed, non-removable batteries should test the alarms to see if they are functional, according to the association.

Since 2019, New York has required that all smoke alarms sold in the state be equipped with sealed, non-removable batteries that will last for at least 10 years. But there are still many previously installed smoke detectors that have replaceable batteries.

Almost three out of five home fire deaths from 2014 to 2018 were caused by fires in properties with no smoke alarms (41%) or smoke alarms that failed to operate (16%), according to a report last month from the National Fire Protection Association.

Deaths in house fires are 55 percent lower in homes with working smoke alarms than in homes with no alarms or alarms that fail to operate, the association reported.
