Air cargo continued to prop up operations at Ontario International Airport in February, while air passenger traffic remained down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Last month, air freight volumes rose by 14.3% over February 2020, more than 62,800 tons of cargo moved in and out of the airport. In fact, the airport’s freight totals for the first two months of 2021 equaled about 133,000 tons, nearly a 15% jump from the same period in 2020. Mail shipments more than doubled, reaching 6,400 tons.
“Our airport continues to be a bright reflection of the Inland Empire’s skilled labor force and vibranteconomy in 2021,” said Mark Thorpe, chief executive officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority, in a statement.
As online shopping increases during the pandemic, more packages are arriving at ONT and being processed through facilities operated by Amazon, UPS and FedEx. The airport’s cargo tenants also serve logistics warehouses in the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley.
“Despite the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on air travel and other sectors of the economy, freight shipments through Ontario continue to show tremendous strength and make the airport a focal point of Southern California’s goods movement industry,” Thorpe said.
However, the 152,000 air travelers through ONT in February was 63% less than the same month in 2020. So far this year, passengers decreased about 65% over the same time last year.
Air travelers may increase in March and into the summer as airlines resume suspended flights. Hawaiian Airlines began five-times-a-week service to Honolulu on March 17 and American Airlines will begin new service to Charlotte, N.C. on May 6 and to Chicago in August.
