This beautiful Italianate home at the southwest corner of Tipton and Lincoln Way, pictured here in 1962, was torn down and replaced with the White Hen Pantry building. The Clark gas station sign is seen at left.

Singer and actress Dorothy Claire, 1925-1982, was born in La Porte as Marietta Wright. Claire sang with the Big Band Era orchestras of Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller and Bob Crosby and starred on stage and in movies. She appeared on television on the Paul Winchell Show and the Joey Bishop Show. Claire finished as ninth most popular female vocalist in Billboard magazine’s 1941 poll.

The Crane’s Nest estate, owned by La Porte artist/designer Ross Crane, sat on the bluff overlooking Pine Lake at the corner of Pine Lake Avenue (Highway 35) and Severs Road. Crane served on the board of the Art Institute of Chicago. The home was at its best in the early to mid part of the 20th century. Its remains were burned by vandals decades later.
