Unemployment too low to meet demand in jobs - KSNB Local 4

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - With the demand in services booming, local businesses are struggling to hire more people, as the unemployment rate gets lower and lower.

“We have seen some backlogs with some of our divisions that require us to ensure we have a really full staff,” said Chief Industries Director of Marketing and Communications Beth Frerichs.

Chief industries Inc. is a manufacturer in Grand Island and they’ve seen an increase in demand across all of their products.

“We are seeing it through agriculture with a lot of the grain prices rising more than we’ve seen in the past’” Frerichs said “We see Chief Agri having more demand because people are updating or putting new grain bins up or grain dryers.”

Now the company is looking for more people to handle the workload.

“The supply, we really need to make sure we’re getting that out to our customers and in order to do so, we really have to find those really talented employees,” Frerichs said.

Essential Personnel Inc. in Grand Island helps places like Chief Industries fill open positions. Recently they’ve had more work than they could handle.

“Prior to the pandemic hitting our area, we were starting out with one of our strongest years ever, meaning the greatest number of job openings that we were trying to fill,” Essential Personnel Inc. President Travis Powell said. “So far this first quarter has exceeded that of 2020.”

This happens to be a good thing but at the same time the workforce isn’t getting any larger.

“The unemployment rate is still very low,” Powell said. “There’s other external factors out there that are not necessarily encouraging people to go to work.”

Nebraska’s unemployment rate is the third lowest in the country at 3.2. There’s just a little over a million people in the workforce with more than 992,077 of them having jobs. This means there’s only 32,617 people left for open positions.

“It’s really taken a lot more people in our company and a lot more resources to try to find those and qualify those individuals to match those up with the appropriate positions throughout the area,” Powell said.

It’s been hard for Chief Industries to find new hires as well. With Central Nebraska’s main industry being agriculture, they’re competing within a small pool for applicants.

“There’s a number of different organizations who are looking for the same type of employees that Chief is, so there is really a competitive piece out there for recruiting really talented candidates,” Frerichs said

They have had to up their game when it comes to getting new hires. They’ve been spending more money on advertising and marketing tools to get their attention.

Chief Industries is currently seeking to fill several vacancies throughout the company. People interested in checking out which jobs are available can click here.
