Massachusetts reported 16 deaths from the novel coronavirus Tuesday — surpassing Monday as the lowest daily fatality count since April 5 — as cases rose by 229.

The 16 new deaths bring the state’s COVID-19 toll to 7,890, according to the Department of Public Health. Tuesday’s count is one higher than the 15 fatalities reported on April 5, in the earliest days of the pandemic.

Of the 229 new cases reported Tuesday, 182 were confirmed infections and 47 were probable. There are now 102,651 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the commonwealth, and a total of 107,439 proven and likely cases.

Gov. Charlie Baker said Tuesday the state is “obviously encouraged by the continued progress we’ve made on many of those public health metrics.”

He cited the state’s seven-day average percent positive test rate, 1.9% as of Monday, a 93% drop from April 15. And he mentioned the drop in the three-day average number of hospitalizations — 933 as of Monday — a 74% drop from mid-April.

Three hospitals were using surge capacity as of Monday, up from two the couple days prior, but still an 86% drop since mid-April. The three-day average number of deaths was 20 as of Saturday, down 87% during that time period.

But the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 ticked up to 953 Tuesday from 920 on Monday. There were 181 people in intensive care units, up one from Monday, and five more people were intubated for a total of 112.

Long-term care facilities ravaged by coronavirus outbreaks reported another 14 deaths for a total of 4,970. There are 369 facilities with at least one COVID-19 case, and 23,237 workers and residents of those centers have fallen ill.

There are 9.1 million cases of the novel virus worldwide, with more than 473,000 deaths and 4.5 million recoveries, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker. The United States now has more than 2.3 million cases — with spikes reported across the South and West — and 120,000 deaths, with 640,198 recoveries.
