A First Alert Weather Day and a Flood Watch remain in effect for Kauai County as moisture from a weakening kona low continues to stream over the westernmost islands, keeping a threat of heavy rain and thunderstorms in place.
We have a First Alert for Oahu, which may also see increased showers this afternoon from an area of moisture pluming off Hawaii Island. If this happens, heavier shower activity is possible over already-soaked windward areas.
There is an end in sight to this wet, humid and unstable weather. High pressure is forecast to build in as the kona low weakens and shifts to the north, bringing a return of the trade winds Monday. Trade wind showers may still be enhanced by lingering moisture over the islands for the first part of the coming week. More typical conditions should finally return for the second half of the work week.
In surf, a high surf advisory remains in effect for south-facing shores, with elevated waves through early next week from a series of overlapping south-southwest swells, although wave heights may fall just below advisory levels Sunday. North shore waves will lowers through the weekend, with small surf continuing for east shores due to the lack of trade winds.
