Crews from watershed management are onsite and 'working aggressively' to make repairs.
ATLANTA — The city's Department of Watershed Management is investigating potentially two major water main breaks in Atlanta that are causing widespread issues throughout the city.
The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management reports that one of the breaks involves a 32-inch water main in the Vine City neighborhood near the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW and James P. Brawley Drive. That's on the city's west side and near several major landmarks and attractions, including the Atlanta University Center, Georgia Tech, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and more.
The department said that a particular break is causing water outages and low water pressure throughout the downtown area. The Georgia Aquarium said in a statement that it is one of those businesses being impacted, though it assured that the issue was only affecting restrooms and similar areas and not its animal systems. The aquarium said it was closing for the day while the city addressed the break.
11Alive is reaching out to other businesses in the area to confirm outages or other impacts.
Video of the scene from the 11Alive SkyTracker showed the intersection flooded as crews tried to fix the break.
Crews from watershed management are onsite and "working aggressively" to make repairs to the break affecting the service area, according to the department.
However, it appeared that the break on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard is not the only active one impacting the city. The department's outage map also showed another potentially major break off Glenwood Avenue SE, on the east side of the city, near the East Lake Golf Club.
Reports from residents online said entire apartment buildings were without water, and others reported outages from Grant Park to the Poncy-Highland area.
The Department of Watershed Management said it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
