Our Storm Track 5 weather team is forecasting temperatures could drop to near single digits next week.

The coldest air of the season is heading to our region next week with lows possibly in the single digits. High winds have already hit parts of the area on multiple occasions this week.

In fact, during News 5’s Kiley Hill’s interview, they lost power.

“Woah, wow, well there goes our power,” said Grace Wilson with Keith’s House of Plumbing.

With frigid temperatures knocking on our door, plumbers with Keith’s house of plumbing are asking residents to take precautions.

They said to have a stream of both hot and cold water running from your faucet about the size of a pencil lead and not shut the water off until the temperatures outside rise above freezing.

“That way your hot and cold is moving and water won't freeze as long as it's moving,” said Keith’s House of Plumbing owner Kevin Keith.

“Don't turn it off, get it going before the cold hits, and don't get up the next morning and go "Oh I can turn my water off now",” added Wilson. “Because if the temperatures don't rise above freezing then your water will freeze up the next day so keep it going until you’re out of the danger of freeze."

Keith and Wilson told News 5 there are also other preventative measures people can take.

"Maybe open your cabinet doors on sinks that are facing the outside wall to allow heat to go in that way,” said Wilson. “And if you have a crawl space, make sure it's all button upped and know where your cutoff is, if you have a cutoff at your house somewhere or is it down at the street, so if something did happen you could get your water turned off.”

Following the record cold temperatures in December of 2022 and numerous calls at that time for busted pipes, they say they are better prepared and have made efforts to serve the community as needed.

“When we saw this inclement weather coming this time, we did open up our schedule a little bit so we could service more people.”

Keith said a high water bill is better than thousands of dollars in plumbing repairs.

“The cost of the water won't matter versus the plumbing repairs and sheetrock repairs and all that goes with that.”
