Kitchen Cops: Fuzzy strawberries, a shockingly low score downtown and a Waffle House briefly shut down - WAFF

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Last week’s ice storm meant that health departments around north Alabama were closed. And, just like a lot of you, they’ve got a lot of catching up to do. This week, we got a mountain of inspection scores from before and after the ice storm. This included a lot of well-known and highly regarded restaurants with seriously low scores.

Madison County

We’ll start off in downtown Huntsville, where Commerce Kitchen has the lowest score of the week with a 72. There were multiple foods at the wrong temperature - including eggs, turkey, tuna and cabbage. Inspectors also saw an employee touching ready-to-eat foods bare-handed, and couldn’t locate important food safety testing materials. In addition, there was black residue in the ice machine, and not enough sanitizer in the dishwasher. When inspectors returned almost two weeks later, the ice machine was clean but the dishwasher had zero sanitizer in it. This led inspectors to issue a “NOIS” (notice of intent to suspend the license) against the business.

Fusion Barbecue at Lincoln Mill on Meridian Street has a 75 this week. It also had black residue in the ice chute, along with missing hand soap and paper towels at one hand washing sink and a missing food temperature thermometer. There was also issues with chicken and cheese at the wrong temperature.

Chuy’s at Bon Wallace and the Parkway is next with a 76. Inspectors found refried beans at the wrong temperature, along with grey fuzz on strawberries and dirty utensils stored with clean ones.

The Waffle House on Highway 231/431 in Meridianville was briefly shut down because there was no working hot water in the building when inspectors came in. The business was allowed to reopen once the water was fixed. At the same time, inspectors found a dirty ice machine and dirty soda nozzles. When they came back for a follow-up, the ice bins were still dirty and Waffle House was hit with an NOIS warning. The Waffle House’s final score is 78.

The Hideaway Bar and Grille on Lodge Road was written up for leaving raw chicken out to thaw for 7 hours. There was also a dirty ice machine and cleaning items improperly stored in a sink. The Hideaway gets a 79.

The Cracker Barrel at Drake and the Parkway got an 80. There were several dirty dishes and bowls stored with clean ones, grey fuzz on the strawberries and no employees on-site with a food safety course certification.

The main cafeteria and kitchen at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children got an 83 this week. There were multiple foods at the wrong temperature, dirty dishes stored with clean ones and damaged spatulas in the kitchen.

Pizza Hut on North Memorial Parkway is hit with an 84 due to food temperature violations.

Agustin Market on Highway 72 is given a 78 score this week. The Limestone County Health Department says it found unexplained bread with no labels and no known origin in the kitchen. There was also no soap at a hand sink and paper towels missing at another sink. Perhaps the most serious violation was that Agustin Market only has a Category 2 permit, but it was cooking raw eggs and meats. You’re only allowed to do that with a category 3 permit.

The River Bridge Shell on 6th Avenue had a hand sink blocked, and multiple meats at the wrong temperature during it’s most recent inspection. There was also an issue with dirty food contact surfaces and dirty spoons. It gets a 79.

Las Vias on the Beltline gets an 80 this week due to multiple food temperature violations, mold in an ice machine and dirty cutlery.

Captain D’s on the Beltline also gets an 80 due to mold in an ice machine, broken fryer baskets and food temperature violations.

Tacos El Palomino on 6th Avenue also had mold in it’s machine and got an 83.

Scruggs BBQ on Highway 20 was written up for grease on the ground and sausage at the wrong temperature and scores an 84.
