It's an exciting time to be looking for tickets for travel across the Atlantic as a number of European low-cost airlines are launching new routes across the ocean at very low prices. Just in time for summer and the relaxation of Europe travel restrictions.
This week, it is the inaugural flight of Icelandic airline PLAY from New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) to major EU hubs, such as Dublin, Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen and of course, Reykjavík in Iceland.
It will also be the very first time that New York Stewart airport will have used its new $37 million international arrivals and U.S. Customs expansion.
To celebrate the new route, ticket prices start from $99 to Iceland and $129 to other European destinations for travel between August 31 and November 16.
It follows the first two routes launched by PLAY out of Baltimore/Washington D.C (BWI) since April and out of Boston (BOS) since May 22.
The airline offers a pay-as-you-go model, adding on extra legroom and bigger bags to upgrade journeys. Stopovers can also be factored into ticket prices at no extra cost.
PLAY's CEO Birgir Jónsson commented that the "flight from New York comes less than one year after PLAY’s very first flight from Iceland in 2021. Despite a challenging travel market, PLAY has still grown and established itself in Europe and the United States. We flew more than 100,000 passengers in our first seven months of operations."
Jónsson added that the airline "expects to serve more than 1 million passengers in our second year of operations." Despite rising oil prices, the airline has a positive outlook on international travel.
Play joins another EU airline startup, French Bee, which launched a low-cost route from Los Angeles (LAX) to Paris (ORY) in May 2022—the route takes 10 hours, will be flying six weekly flights by July and prices start at €321, one-way.
