It was 21-0 Green Bay at halftime and it could have been worse.
Inside a near-empty stadium, Packers fans wrapped in green and gold proudly stood and cheered, quickly taking over NRG Stadium. There was a “Defense!” chant when the Texans were on offense, too.
When the home team finally found a little momentum, the only promising drive of the first half ended up with third down and 25, followed by a missed field goal.
I thought the Texans were just trying to win a few games in 2020.
Wrong.
They are obviously rebuilding. Or tanking. Whatever you want to call it. Even though Miami possesses their initial two picks in the upcoming 2021 draft and Deshaun Watson is good enough to make the playoffs in a crazy 2020 season.
Firing Bill O’Brien as head coach, general manager and offensive playcaller after just four games was supposed to be the lowest point of the Texans’ season.
The new one arrived Sunday with a reeking, stinking thud.
Aaron Rodgers dissected, then destroyed the Texans. And a 1-6 team officially became one of the NFL’s worst teams, via a 35-20 Packers victory.
The only bit of good news for the home crew: They’re off next week.
Which means that they should take advantage of the downtime to trade at least five players. Maybe 10, if CEO Cal McNair and interim GM Jack Easterby are really feeling aggressive and want to get a head start on 2021, a new head coach and new GM.
The Texans pulled within 21-7 after Watson hit David Johnson for a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half. (Using Johnson as a receiver, rather than a running back, should also seriously be considered during the bye week.)
Rodgers answered by drilling Davante Adams for Rodgers’ fourth TD of the day and Adams’ second.
Green Bay’s all-world QB was playing a video game.
The Texans were running Johnson up the middle on first down, starting Eric Murray at safety, and insisting that no one on the roster was getting traded during the same week they were blown out.
Now, the Texans are 1-6.
Accelerate the change that 2021 represents.
