FARGO — I am so grateful each day is a new and amazing opportunity to learn and grow. I pray this column is a regular part of your learning and growth. I attended a team training day today. In one of the sessions the speaker shared a fascinating quote about leading in chaos. She heard it from a colleague but has been unable to discern who originally said it. I did not create it, but it certainly is worth repeating!
Here is the quote: “When leading in chaos focus on making good decisions, and then better decisions, rather than right decisions.” Wow, what a healthy way to move into and through uncertainty. Have you ever been at such a foggy or difficult place that making a right decision paralyzed you? Perhaps you even feel like there is not a right decision? Rather than focusing on the right decision what would happen if you focus on making a good decision?
Since hearing that quote in the early afternoon, my wife and I have had two difficult decisions to make regarding two different family situations. I do not know if we made the right decision, but I know we made good decisions. And we can make better decisions as the situations unfold. The result will be navigating these situations confidently by the grace of God with the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
My guess is that many of you are facing chaotic times, including and outside of the COVID-19 pandemic. I pray this thought on decision-making will be helpful and hope-full for you! Never underestimate the importance of decision making. Every decision takes us somewhere. Our life is the sum of the decisions we make.
Another quote from today I will bring with me through the chaotic season we are travelling through is this: “We are all in the same storm, but we are not all in the same boat.” Yes, we all are navigating through a storm. It is easy to assume we are all in the same boat. We are not. We all have unique boats we are rowing.
What if during this chaos we take time to listen to each other, to collaborate, to share resources and to help when and where we can? We are all in the same storm, but our boats are different.
In Luke chapter 10 Jesus sent out 72 missionaries to serve, encourage and heal those who were hurting. He let them know they would be like lambs among wolves. Yep, the storm would be great. The challenge would be large. The obstacles would be intimidating. One of the fascinating keys to me, was Jesus sent them out two by two.
I love the picture and the power of going out two by two. Storms require you and me to have the right people around us. If you have the right people around you, you can weather any storm. Without the right people, a small storm can capsize your life quickly and easily.
God bless you. I will “see” you next week!
