ANN ARBOR – Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard has canceled its Week 3 football game with Detroit UD Jesuit due to a lack of numbers.
FGR head coach Matt Giarmo confirmed with MLive Thursday night that the team wouldn’t be playing Friday as a precaution.
“We had to make this decision due to the limited number of players on our roster and taking into consideration the health and safety of our players,” Giarmo said via text message. “Basically, just trying to keep our kids safe with our small numbers.”
The Fighting Irish were entering their first Catholic League matchup at 1-1 after beating Burton Bendle last week and were scheduled to face a UD Jesuit team that has an enrollment nearly three times as large as FGR’s (1,410 to 479).
The second-year coach said during a practice before the season began that low numbers would be a challenge for the team this year.
“We need other guys to step up in other positions because we have low numbers,” Giarmo told MLive in August.
Giarmo emphasized that the cancellation was not COVID-19 related and that he fully anticipates the team playing next week against Dearborn Divine Child.
“No just looking out for our kids' safety,” he said. “We are really limited with numbers.”
UD Jesuit found a new opponent for Friday and will face Lake Orion, who was also looking for a new team after its originally scheduled opponent Southfield A&T canceled due to COVID-19 reasons.
FGR is the second Ann Arbor-area team that had a game affected due to low participation numbers this week.
Chelsea had its original opponent Adrian cancel because of a lack of healthy players but the Bulldogs were able to find a replacement early Thursday morning and will now face Schoolcraft Saturday.
