AMHERST — A low bid of $1.79 million has been received by town officials for the planned renovation and rehabilitation of the North Common in front of Town Hall.
Whether the project on the the .75-acre property, bounded by Main, Spring and South Pleasant streets, can commence this summer or fall, though, is still uncertain, Town Manager Paul Bockelman said this week.
Though the town has enough money to undertake the project, using a federal $827,066 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant combined with previous Community Preservation Act money, the timing of getting a contractor to the site is still unclear.
The town received five bids by the July 12 deadline, with the lowest from Caracas Construction of Ludlow.
Bockelman said the procurement process is still underway.
Last November, the aging Merry Maple tree was cut down as part of making way for the project to commence and to be completed by June 2024.
The final concept for restoring and activating the North Common space, developed by the Department of Public Works, was finalized in 2021.
Town officials have said the current plans include making the site fully handicapped accessible, honoring the history of the common, safeguarding as many trees as possible, addressing severe erosion, and adding adequate lighting. Much of the parking will be removed to make way for a plaza.
In ascending order, the other bids came from Diversified Construction of Amherst at $1.89 million, Rifenburg Contracting of Troy, New York at $2.09 million, Jack Goncalves and Sons of Ludlow at $2.18 million and Moss-West Construction of Granby at $2.35 million.
