A rare sight took place in the skies above the lower and central parts of Bucks County Sunday afternoon.
Between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., LevittownNow.com readers reported seeing a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber making low passes over the area. Reports from readers came in from Bensalem Township, Langhorne Borough, Northampton Township, Middletown Township, New Hope Borough, and Warminster Township.
According to public flight data, the bomber circled over the county at between 3,000 and 4,000 feet in preparation for a flyover at the start of the Philadelphia Eagles home game.
It’s not uncommon to see cargo and tanker planes and helicopters belonging to the armed services passing over the area, but stealth bombers are more rare.
The B-2 Spirit is a multi-role bomber that can drop conventional and nuclear weapons, according to the U.S. Air Force.
The exotic shape of the jet gives it low-observable, or “stealth,” attributes that make it able to evade enemy air defense system, the U.S. Air Force said.
The local flyover occurred just days after the military and contractor Northrop Grumman revealed the secret B-21 project. The new stealth bomber is expected to fly in 2023, according to The War Zone, a newsroom dedicated to defense coverage.
