TUCSON, Ariz. – Fighting Illini senior Adrien Dumont de Chassart carded 14 birdies in two rounds on Friday en route to an 11-under day - Including a career-low round of 8-under 64 in Round 2. He paces the Illini and sits in second place heading into Saturday's final round at the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T) at OMNI Tucson National Resort's Catalina Course.
"To shoot 8-under (for Round 2) and 11-under for the day, he was our horse and we've been wanting someone to step up and take charge," said head coach Mike Small of Dumont de Chassart's performance. "When a guy plays like that, and the team can get him some help, you'll be right in the middle of things.
"Adrien was in total command of his game today. He drove it solidly, and he started to get real comfortable on, and around the greens in the afternoon round."
Dumont de Chassart's score of 64 (-8) in Round 2 bested his previous career-low tally by one stroke. He carded 7-under 65 on two occasions – first in the second round of a runner-up finish at the 2021 Louisiana Classics and again that same week in Round 2 of last season's NIT.
Behind Dumont de Chassart's effort, the Illini are alone in seventh place in the 15-team field, but find themselves poised for another strong finish with just five strokes separating them from second place, currently held by host Arizona (-20).
"After 36 holes it's not very widespread - from second to ninth is pretty bunched up - so tomorrow is an important round to come out and get after it," added Small.
Oklahoma State is in control at -41, followed by Arizona with a two stroke edge over Oklahoma and New Mexico in a tie for third at -18. Texas and Pepperdine are just one stroke ahead of the Illini at 16-under.
Junior Jerry Ji also shot under par of the day for the Illini, shooting 73-70 to finish 1-under in a tie for 36th. Behind Ji, a trio of Illini – senior Tommy Kuhl, sophomore Piercen Hunt, and freshman Jackson Buchanan – are tied for 44th at even par heading into Round 3.
Senior Luke Armbrust, playing as an individual, is tied for 82nd after back-to-back rounds of 76.
Round 3 is set to begin with tee times on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. CT/7:30 a.m. PT. The Illini, paired with Arkansas (-10) and Tennessee (-9), are set to begin off No. 1 as part of the first groupings on the course. Live scoring is available throughout the final round on Golfstat.com.
