FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team split a pair of games, Saturday, on day two of the FGCU Invitational. The Eagles defeated Belmont, 2-1, to open the night before dropping a 3-1 decision to Austin Peay in the nightcap.

FGCU now sits at 5-4 on the season while Belmont goes to 2-2 and Austin Peay improves to 6-3.

"Happy to come with a split on a day we did not swing the bats well," said head coach David Deiros. "We will do better tomorrow."

In game one, junior Ally Hulme (Safety Harbor, Fla./Sickles HS/State College of Florida) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just one run while striking out a season-high seven. Senior Emily Estroff (Coconut Creek, Fla./Coral Springs HS/Villanova) finished the game to earn the save, throwing the final 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit and no runs.

Redshirt-senior Cana Davis (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby HS/Virginia Tech) gave the Eagles the early lead as ripped a double to left-center to drive in a run.

After Belmont tied it the game in the second, the game remained deadlocked until the fifth when junior Jordyn Gendron (Tampa, Fla./Wharton HS) socked her first home run of the season to provide the winning run.

In game two, the Governors took a 1-0 lead in the second but senior Tayli Filla (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS/USF) tied it up in the home half as she hit her first home run as an Eagle.

However, that was all the Eagles offense could muster against Samantha Meiner and after the Governors retook a 3-1 lead in the third, they held on to win by that same score.

The Eagles will be back tomorrow for day three of the Eagle Invitational. They will play Austin Peay again at 11:15 am before taking on Memphis at 1:30 p.m.
