MONMOUTH, Ore. – With scoring at a premium, the Western Oregon University baseball team split their home opening doubleheader against Eastern Oregon on Saturday. The Mountaineers took the first game in 10 innings, 3-1, before WOU came back to win the nightcap, 2-1.

Hits and runs were certainly hard to come by with just seven total runs off of 19 combined hits over the 17 innings.

In the first game of the day, Matthew Dunaway and Jaydon Yancey went toe-to-toe on the mound. Dunaway went five innings, allowing just one earned run, along with eight strikeouts. Yancey went six innings, allowing no runs and working around five walks.

The game stretched into the fourth inning before either team was able to plate a run before Eastern Oregon (5-8) tallied a run for the 1-0 lead.

It remained that way into the ninth when the Wolves (6-4) put together a rally. With one out, Spencer Weston worked a walk. Levi Cummings came on to pinch-run and moved to second on a wild pitch before later advancing to third on a single by Jackson Holstad. Holstad stole second before an intentional walk to Justyn Herzog loaded the bases. Leighton Moniz entered as a pinch-hitter and worked out a walk for the RBI to tie the game at one. With the bases still loaded, a fly out to center retired the side and sent the game into extra innings.

In the 10th, a big triple by Matt Garcia ended up scoring a pair of runs to open up a 3-1 lead for Eastern Oregon.

Down to their last at-bat, WOU had three groundouts to end the game with the Mountaineers taking the 3-1 victory.

Holstad led the Wolves with two hits. On the mound, Sebasten Boivin relieved Dunaway in the sixth inning and pitched a pair of innings not allowing a run with a pair of strikeouts. Mike Peterson made his season debut in the eighth working a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Chris Hardin ended up with the loss (0-3) working 1.1 innings and allowing one earned run with three strikeouts. Parker Johnson pitched the final two-thirds of the 10th, allowing an earned run with a strikeout.

Elgin McKlane led Eastern Oregon with two hits and Garcia had the two RBI. On the mound, Jacob Farnsworth relieved Yancey in the seventh and tossed two scoreless innings. Bennett King went the final two innings to get the win (1-0) allowing one earned run.

It was another strong battle of the starting pitchers in the second game with Seth Kuykendall going against Davis Brown. Kuykendall ended up working six innings to get the win (2-1), allowing one unearned run and added eight strikeouts. Brown went the first 4.2 innings to end up with the no decision allowing one earned run.

Eastern Oregon cashed in the first run of the second game in the third inning as a trio of errors led to an unearned run and a 1-0 lead for the Mountaineers.

WOU came right back in the fourth to even things up. John Stark opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a single by Sebastian Morales. After both moved up on a sacrifice bunt, Mason Whitehead hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate the tying run.

The Wolves took the lead for good in the sixth. Jack Strickland walked to open the frame and Cummings came in to pinch-run. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk to Derek Maiben put runners at first and second. Moniz worked a walk to load the bases. Jacob Maiben drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center for the 2-1 lead.

Michael Moore came on to pick up his second save of the season in the seventh. After quickly recording two outs, an error extended the inning. A walk followed to put runners at first and second. Moore buckled down getting a strikeout to end the game with WOU taking the 2-1 victory.

Derek Maiben, Jacob Maiben, Holstad, Stark and Morales all had hits for the Wolves. Jacob Maiben and Whitehead each added RBI.

Brooks Dyer led Eastern Oregon with two hits. On the mound in addition to Brown, Slayder Watterson pitched the final 1.1 innings to end up with the loss (0-1) allowing one run.

WOU and EOU will turn around and play another doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon at the WOU Baseball Field.
