Provincetown, the popular Cape Cod community hit by a COVID-19 cluster during Independence Day weekend, reported a new low in the rate of positive tests since health officials started tracking the outbreak.

Tuesday’s 3.2% positivity rate — along with a seven-day average positivity rate of 4.2% — are lows after rates reached about 15% in mid-July amid a cluster that eventually included more than 1,000 people in several states. Town and health officials continue to express optimism that the outbreak is subsiding after impacting a large number of vaccinated people but leading to only a handful of hospitalizations and zero deaths. More than 220 people have recovered and Town Manager Alex Morse, in a Facebook post Wednesday, reiterated that “the number of people recovering each day exceeds the number of new cases being added.”

As of Wednesday, the town reports 57 active cases.

Provincetown officials recently reimplemented an indoor mask mandate on the recommendation of health officials wary of the highly contagious delta variant — a move that was echoed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when it recommended indoor masking, even for vaccinated Americans, in COVID-19 hotspots across the country.

“We are well on our way to containment,” Morse said in a Facebook post on Monday. He noted that a test positivity rate less than 5% is considered progress toward containment. Before hitting 3.2% on Tuesday, the rate had seen a small uptick for two days in a row after previously falling to 3.3% on July 31, according to data tracked by Transformative Healthcare at the Fallon Ambulance mobile testing site.

Six Massachusetts residents linked to the cluster have been hospitalized; two have been hospitalized live out-of-state.

Morse noted that since July 1, Outer Cape has administered 150 vaccinations in Provincetown, and Fallon has administered 67 vaccinations since July 14. Testing and vaccination will continue daily at the Veterans Memorial Community Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., through at least Saturday, Aug. 21.
