Daylight saving heads rejoice -- the state, and country, are one step closer to never arbitrarily changing time ever again. After this next time, anyway.
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, co-sponsored the Sunshine Protection Act, reintroduced by U.S, Sen. Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican who originally introduced the act in 2019.
“The Sunshine Protection Act takes a common-sense step to provide some much-needed stability for families in Oregon and across the nation,” Wyden said in a statement. “Springing forward and falling back year after year only creates unnecessary confusion while harming Americans’ health and our economy. Making Daylight Saving permanent would give folks an hour back of sunshine during the winter months when we need it most.”
Oregon and other states are waiting for this legislation to pass so they can get rid of time changes altogether. The Oregon Legislature has signed on to the idea but needs the national legislation to make it happen.
According to the information presented by the sponsors of the bill, eliminating time changes would reduce car crashes and accidents, depression, cardiac arrests, childhood obesity and energy use, while helping the economy, farmers and people, in general, who could use more exercise.
It’s almost as if random jet lag-like effects for everyone twice a year is bad for you in every single way.
States that do not observe daylight saving time wouldn’t have to start, but if the bill passes, Oregonians and many other Americans would live forever in a sunny, daylight saving world.
