The Sioux topped Lyman, 51-36, in the consolation bracket of the State B boys basketball tournament at Wachs Arena. The neighboring Lyman County schools separated by 40 miles are littered with friends and former classmates, adding a layer of familiarity to the contest.
“We are good friends with them,” Lyman coach Cooper Garnos said. “The people of Lower Brule and there’s a lot of kids that come to Lyman that are from Lower Brule. There’s good friends and good relationships. It was definitely fun in that aspect.”
In the end, Lower Brule had more fun and limited Lyman (19-6) to its lowest-scoring output of the season. The Raiders shot 16 of 49 from the field and 2 of 9 at the 3-point line.
“We were just being out hustled defensively and offensively,” said Lyman center Toby Estes, who finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. “Obviously they wanted it more than we did. We came out flat and that really dug us a grave.”
Lower Brule, which received 17 points and 12 rebounds from Keshaume Thigh, stretched its advantage to 47-31 entering the fourth quarter. The teams combined for just nine points in the final quarter.
The Sioux (17-8) shot 20 of 50 from the field and hit 7 3-pointers. Shane Grey Owl and Gavin Thigh netted 11 points apiece.
“That second half we had to play together and move the ball,” Lower Brule coach Brian LaRoche Sr., said. “We were pushing the ball and looking to shoot.”
Lower Brule also looked to defend the Raiders. Garnos noted how Lower Brule’s ball pressure caused fits, leading to 16 turnovers on 11 steals for the Sioux.
“I thought they pushed us out further from the basket with their defense,” Garnos said. “It seemed like they were a step quicker and they did a lot of good things.”
After Estes, Sam McClanahan finished with nine points for the Raiders. Stockton McClanahan added eight points.
Lower Brule plays White River at 2:15 p.m. Saturday in the consolation championship. The Tigers defeated the Sioux, 85-55, on Jan. 12.
Lyman plays Canistota at noon Saturday in the seventh-place game.
“I am looking forward to getting one more game with our seniors,” Estes said. “It’s their last game. So it will be fun.”
Garnos said the contest will hinge on the mental state of both teams.
“A lot of it is upstairs,” Garnos said. “It’s mental and how are we going to react and come back in those respects.”
Notes: During an inbound play, Lower Brule’s Shane Grey drilled a shot from the sideline. But it didn’t count and a jump ball awarded the ball back to Lyman.
