“What was more fun to sell than ice cream? I never found anything.”

Kerry King is the Regional Manager for Blue Bell Creameries in Tampa.
He’s been working for the company since January of 1982, back when they were just in Texas - now they are in 27 states.
The West Virginia native moved to Houston and had a job, but saw an ad for an ice cream delivery driver and salesperson. He figured he knew how to drive and that ice cream would not be hard to sell at all!
“People want something that makes them feel good.”
And during the pandemic, it was never truer.
“I've seen, you know, the times where the economy drops and Blue Bell and the ice cream sales in general pickup,” said King.
And with people at home, they bought more ice cream. They bought so much ice cream inventory became and remains an issue.
“But now, we concentrate on our most popular flavors,” said King. “We pick about 15, and we try to make sure we always have those. And that's even been a challenge.”
King will be retiring at the end of the year, and says he’ll be leaving when Blue Bell is at the top of its game.
“I've seen it grow. Cause I started when Blue Bell was pretty small,” said King. “And to see the growth now is amazing.”
