When are the VMAs? What time, channels, nominations, performances and how MTV is social distancing. - NJ.com

The COVID-19 pandemic did not stop the music — or music videos. But the health crisis has had a tangible effect on the 2020 Video Music Awards, airing Sunday, August 30.

Still, MTV is moving ahead with plans for a live show, a rarity for awards shows during the pandemic.

Social distancing means a different kind of show. And this year, there are categories for “best quarantine performance” and “best music video from home.”

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande lead the VMA nominations with nine a piece, mostly for their No. 1 song “Rain on Me,” co-written by Union Township’s own Nija Charles.

The Weeknd and his song “Blinding Lights,” which was the soundtrack to a viral TikTok dance challenge, are up for awards in six categories. Billie Eilish also claims six nominations.

Here’s a brief overview of what to expect from the pandemic edition of the VMAs.

Keke Palmer is fronting the show this year. The multi-hyphenate talent, 27, is an actress (“Hustlers”), TV host (”Strahan, Sara and Keke”) and singer (”Virgo Tendencies”).

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in June that the awards show would be at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but because of COVID-19 precautions, the VMAs will not be an indoor affair this year.

The show will instead be made up of outdoor performances spread across the city, and there will not be the same kind of audience as in years past.

MTV says the VMAs will “pay homage to the incredible resiliency of New York with several outdoor performances around the city with limited or no audience.”

New York requires that travelers coming from many other states quarantine for 14 days, but an exception is being made for performers at the VMAs, CBS reports. Artists are expected to wear masks when they aren’t performing.

The VMAs took place in Newark last year, at the Prudential Center. The show also included a taped Jonas Brothers performance at the boardwalk and Stone Pony in Asbury Park.

This year, it looks like there could be a sequel in Asbury Park, possibly for one of the remote performances.

New Jersey nominees again include the Jonas Brothers (Wyckoff) for “What a Man Gotta Do” (best pop) and Halsey (Washington/Edison) for “You Should Be Sad” (best pop) and “Graveyard” (best editing).

Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga will team up for a performance of their No. 1 hit song “Rain on Me.” The song is nominated for video of the year, song of the year, best collaboration, best pop, choreography, cinematography and visual effects at the VMAs.

Other performances will come from BTS, DaBaby, Black Eyed Peas, Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Maluma and CNCO.

The awards show will see the TV debut of BTS’ new single “Dynamite” and the first performance of “Vida Loca” from Black Eyed Peas.

The VMAs pre-show (starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT) will also have performances from Chloe x Halle, Lewis Capaldi, Machine Gun Kelly featuring Travis Barker and Blackbear, Tate McRae and Jack Harlow, and honor frontline medical workers. The show will highlight social media “performances” from nurses, doctors and other frontline workers during the pandemic.
