As tropical weather tracks in the Gulf of Mexico, Florida gas prices remain relatively low.
Gas prices across the Sunshine State averaged $2.07 per gallon, 2 cents lower than last week. Tampa Bay prices also trended slightly downward to $2.01 per gallon, 5 cents lower than last Monday.
The bay area had the third-lowest prices in the state.
“The potential for a price hike is always there, when a hurricane threatens the gulf coast refinery region,” said Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman. “So far, oil and gasoline futures prices have remained low, likely because Marco and Laura are not forecast to reach major hurricane status.”
Often, major storms will cause gas prices to rise ahead of landfall as drivers rush to stock up so they can evacuate or weather any supply chain interruptions. Following Hurricane Harvey in 2017, for example, Florida gas prices rose more than 30 cents because of damage done to refineries in Texas.
Prices could still rise depending on the impact. Should the weather injure refineries, affect oil rigs or disrupt the supply chain, gas prices for stores supplied by that region — including Florida — could rise.
Florida’s most-expensive average gas Monday was in West Palm Beach at $2.19 per gallon, followed by Tallahassee ($2.18 per gallon) and Gainesville ($2.17 per gallon).
The least-expensive gas was in Punta Gorda, which averaged $1.96 per gallon, followed by Orlando ($2 per gallon on average) and Tampa Bay.
Nationally, gas averaged $2.19 per gallon.
