Coronavirus cases and deaths continue to trend downward in Michigan as the state enters its 13th week since the first case of the novel virus was reported on March 10.
On Sunday, June 7, 121 new cases and four new deaths were reported. Michigan now has 58,870 cases and 5,656 deaths. Sunday’s four reported deaths made it one of the lowest one-day death totals for Michigan since the first coronavirus cases were confirmed.
Comparatively, last Sunday the state reported 513 new cases and 28 new deaths.
COVID-19 figures reported on Sundays by the state Department of Health and Human Services have tended to be lower than usual, with some county health departments not providing numbers on that day.
Michigan now has 42,041 people listed as recovered as of Saturday, June 6. Recoveries are defined as someone who is still alive 30 days beyond the onset of COVID-19 symptoms. The state reports recovery data every Saturday.
Statewide, the case fatality rate is 9.6%, a small decrease from the 10% fatality rate that persisted for weeks prior.
The health department also unveiled a new data reporting platform Friday. It shows new information including the number of “probable cases” and “probable deaths,” as well as a county-by-county breakdown of testing.
Probable cases include individuals who have symptoms consistent COVID-19 and have a link to positive cases, but do not test positive for the virus. Probable deaths include individuals who have COVID-19 indicated as the cause of death but did not have a positive test for the virus.
In some counties, probable case data could significantly increase the cumulative total of cases.
For example, Livingston County has 409 confirmed cases and 102 probable cases as of Sunday.
Similarly, Oakland County has 8,481 confirmed cases and 2,524 probable cases as of Sunday.
State health leaders encourage people to look at weekly averages when viewing data.
The latest data shows the average for new daily cases at 266 for the week ending June 3. That’s down from 388 the week prior.
Dozens of Michigan’s 250 testing locations offer free testing, and individuals seeking a test no longer need a doctor’s note to get one. Statewide, 839,590 tests have been performed as of Sunday.
To find a testing site near you, check out the state’s online test finder, here, send an email to COVID19@michigan.gov, or call 888-535-6136 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

PREVENTION TIPS
In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.
Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.
Use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and carry hand sanitizer with you when you go into places like stores.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also issued an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings over their mouth and nose while inside enclosed, public spaces.
