PHOENIX (AZFamily) — More than a half-million children across Arizona are getting help to make sure they’re fed this summer.
The Arizona Department of Education and the Arizona Department of Economic Security have announced that they’ve been approved for a new federal benefits program called “SUN Bucks,” which will provide $120 per child in grocery assistance for families who participate or are eligible for the National School Lunch Program.
“Good nutrition is essential to support the health and development of all students,” said State Superintendent Tom Horne. “We are working with the USDA and DES to bring this federal grocery benefits program to Arizona, which is projected to provide additional assistance to over 600,000 students who might not otherwise have the meals they need this summer.”

Children enrolled in an Arizona school participating in the National School Lunch Program must:

According to state officials, the first benefits were loaded on EBT cards this past weekend. However, families who don’t currently have an EBT card but are in qualifying programs will receive a new card in the mail sometime in mid-July.
It’s important to note that SUN Bucks benefits expire 122 days from the day the benefits are made available on your SUN Bucks card.
