Low snow levels expected through Monday - Fox 12 Oregon

singkrata.blogspot.com

Happy Friday! It’s a very showery start to the day across northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. Snow levels have dipped down to about 500-1,000 feet, but some locations have even lower snow levels (like western Washington County). If you live near or above 500 feet, give yourselves a few extra minutes in case there’s some snow on your neighborhood roads. Expect to deal with frequent showers today, some of which will produce downpours with small hail & graupel. Isolated thunderstorms can’t be ruled out west of the Cascades. Anytime we see a heavy shower, it could temporarily lower the snow level. That being said, our snow level should rise to about 1,500-2,000 feet this afternoon. Temperatures will max out in the mid 40s with a breezy south wind.

The showery pattern will continue this weekend and early next week, and our snow levels will stay very low (especially during the nights and early mornings). Why are we staying in this chilly, showery pattern for so many days? We have a slow-moving Pacific trough passing over the region. It will be directly overhead this weekend, bringing us our coolest weather around Sunday. A lot more cities near sea level could drop to 32 degrees, with daytime highs struggling to reach the mid 40s. Sunday morning probably presents the best chance at seeing a quick dusting of snow in the lowest parts of the metro area.

Due to the low snow levels and the showery weather pattern, both this morning and Monday morning will be First Alert Weather Mornings to raise awareness about potential impacts the morning commute. Yes, we’ll have similar weather conditions around this weekend, but we won’t have as many people driving to work before sunrise (or kids heading to school). Today is also a First Alert Weather Day in the Coast Range. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until Saturday morning. Snow accumulation will range anywhere from 2-8 inches below 1,500 feet. Elevations above 1,500 feet may wind up with 6-12+ inches of fresh snow. There’s also a Winter Storm Warning in effect across the Cascades, but that warning is set to expire later this A.M. Elevations above 2,500 feet should pick up another 6-12 inches of snow today, with about 2-6 inches possible in the foothills.

This slow-moving trough will finally push east around mid-next week, giving us a few dry days to enjoy. Temperatures will remain cool for this time of year, with highs in the 40s & overnight lows in the upper 20s / 30s.

Stay safe out there, and have a great Friday!
