Michiganders may notice an increase in low-flying helicopters near transmission lines in the coming weeks.

Electricity transmission company ITC is planning to conduct aerial patrols of their high-voltage transmission structures and lines throughout Michigan starting Monday, Sept. 11, and continuing through Oct. 11.

The Novi-based company’s helicopters are expected to be flying lower than usual during these inspections, and a spokesperson noted that there should be no cause for concern for area residents.

Inspections are scheduled in more than 70 Michigan counties, during which crews will be assessing monopoles, steel towers, wood poles, conductors (wires), insulators and other equipment, as is required by the North American Electrical Reliability Corporation.

Crews check for damaged or worn equipment and vegetation hazards. They look for lightning damage, wear and other problems, which requires inspection from low altitudes.

Weather permitting, the inspection schedule is as follows:

  • Sept. 11-14: Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Arenac, Bay, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Clare, Crawford, Emmet, Gladwin, Grand Traverse, Iosco, Kalkaska, Lake, Leelanau, Manistee, Mason, Midland, Missaukee, Montmorency, Ogemaw, Osceola, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, Roscommon and Wexford.
  • Sept. 18-20: Clinton, Gratiot, Ionia, Isabella, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana and Ottawa.
  • Sept. 25-27: Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Clinton, Eaton, Hillsdale, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent and Lenawee.
  • Oct. 2-6: Genesee, Gratiot, Huron, Ingham, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Midland, Oakland, Sanilac, Shiawassee, St. Clair and Tuscola.
  • Oct. 9-11: Ingham, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne.
