PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Highlighted by a career-low 66 (-5) from sophomore Monet Chun, the 18th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team posted a second-round 281 (-3) team total today (Saturday, April 23) to take the 36-hole lead at the Big Ten Championships at Fox Chapel Golf Club.
Using Chun's second career sub-70 round, along with senior Ashley Lau's 70 (-1) and junior Hailey Borja's 71 (E), the Maize and Blue matched Northwestern 281 team total -- the only two sub-par scores posted Saturday -- to move into the lead. U-M's 566 (-2) 36-hole total has the Wolverines up four shots over Michigan State (282-288) and Northwestern (289-281), which are tied for second at 570 (+2). All three will be paired for the final round starting at 9:54 a.m. off No. 1.
"We really played solid as a team today," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Every player stayed poised when facing a bit of adversity, which was great to see. Both Ashley (Lau) and Hailey (Borja) rebounded with very strong rounds as well, which great players do. Monet (Chun) was just spectacular today. We are really excited for our round tomorrow and embracing the battle."
Scoring early and often in her front nine, Chun posted four of her six birdies on the front side as she jumped into the conference tournament lead at the turn (five under). She erased a bogey on the par-4 13th with two back-nine birdies (Nos. 15 and 17) to help her stay in the lead with a new career-best 66 (-6). She holds a two-shot lead heading into the final round.
After opening with three straight bogeys to start her championship, Chun has played nine under par over her next 33 holes and is tied for the tournament lead with 12 total birdies. In five career Big Ten Championships rounds, Chun has yet to post a round above par -- 71 (-1), 72 (E), 72 (E), 70 (-1) and 66 (-5).
"Today was just one of those rounds where everything felt really good. There wasn't one thing that stood out more than another," said Chun. "I was striking the ball well and putting myself into scoring positions on the greens. My putting felt good. Obviously, I am happy with the result, but I am even happier to help this team."
"What a phenomenal round of golf," added Dowling. "After starting with three bogeys yesterday, she hasn't really looked back. Great ball-striking combined with excellent putting has led to 12 birdies. It's pretty awesome golf!"
Backing up Chun were Lau and Borja, who rebounded from championship-opening tallies of 75 and 79, respectively, to help the Wolverines moved into the tournament lead. With six birdies of her own, Lau bounced back with her team-leading 11th sub-par tally with a 70 (-1), vaulting herself 21 spots into the top 20 as she is tied for 19th at 145 (+3). With three birdies countering three bogeys, Borja carded an even-par 71 and is tied for 43rd at 150 (79-71), along with graduate student Ashley Kim (72-78).
After pacing the Wolverines in the first round, junior Mikaela Schulz remained among the top 30 as she is tied for 27th at 147 (73-74), while senior Sophia Trombetta is tied for 30th at 148 (70-78).
