How Much Watching Time Do You Have This Weekend? - The New York Times

There’s plenty of spooky to go around this Halloween weekend, along with a new series inspired by the life of Kevin Durant.

Dear Watchers,

In news that will surprise no one, HBO’s “Succession” has been renewed for a fourth season. Celebrate on the lavish, yet desolate yacht of your choosing. But for real: Who is going as Shiv for Halloween? The weather here is just right for a backless turtleneck.

Have an ethically suspect weekend.

‘Doctor Who’
When to watch: Sunday at 8 p.m., on BBC America.

Like the blue police box that houses its time-and-space ship, this beloved British series is also a lot bigger on the inside. A sci-fi romp, it has never shrunk from big themes or baroque stories. Its 13th season, the last for both the showrunner Chris Chibnall and the actress Jodie Whittaker, begins with “Chapter One: The Halloween Apocalypse,” the first of six connected episodes. Whittaker, the show’s first female doctor, has been a bull's-eye for bad fandom. But she has a warm, sparky style and a real flair for saving the universe.

WB

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’: ‘Hush’
When to watch: Now, on Amazon Prime Video and Hulu.

If you have understocked your Halloween candy and are cowering in your dark apartment waiting for the neighborhood children to stop knocking, you might want something scary to pass the time. Provided that you can tolerate a show written and directed by Joss Whedon, accused by numerous collaborators of abusive behavior, try this episode from Season 4 of “Buffy.” Nearly wordless, it introduces floating ghouls, the Gentlemen, who still cameo my nightmares. Like all of the series’s best episodes, it functions as both fantastic tale and elegant metaphor, searching out the limits of language.

Apple TV+

‘Swagger’
When to watch: Arrives Friday, on Apple TV+.

A “Friday Night Lights” for the sleeveless jersey set, this new basketball drama follows Jace (Isaiah Hill), a 14-year-old phenomenon with N.B.A. dreams. “I’m not just here to take up space,” Jace says. “I’m here to be special.” He probably is — the show is inspired by the life of its executive producer Kevin Durant. Created by Reggie Rock Bythewood (“Shots Fired”), its early episodes sidestep teen melodrama in favor of an emphasis on the youth basketball grind. The first three episodes debut on Friday, with others arriving weekly.
