Active COVID-19 cases continue to decline in Bayonne, according to Bayonne Police Chief Robert Geisler. Geisler gave the weekly COVID-19 video update on behalf of Mayor James Davis.
As of Oct. 21, there were 22 active COVID-19 cases, down from 31 on Oct. 14. There were 4 hospitalizations at Bayonne Medical Center, up from one on Oct. 14.
“Bayonne continues to see a decline in current COVID-19 cases,” Geisler said. “This also comes with more positive data, as we are seeing more and more residents getting vaccinated.”
The city is offering Pfizer vaccines on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Moderna vaccines are available on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents do not need appointments, and can walk in to the vaccine distribution site at the Korpi Ice Rink at Bayonne High School at 669 Avenue A.
“I want to express my thanks to all our residents for your incredible cooperation throughout this pandemic,” Geisler said. “The last 19 months have been challenging for all of us, and in true Bayonne spirit, we have continued to work together to manage our way through it.”
COVID-19 testing is available at the Bayonne Community Museum at 229 Broadway. Both regular and rapid testing are available on Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment needed.
Third doses versus booster shots
Third doses and booster shots of both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines have been available in Bayonne. Third doses have been authorized since August, meanwhile the Pfizer booster has been available since September. On Oct. 21, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authorized Moderna and Johnson and Johnson booster shots. Meanwhile, the city has already been administering both Moderna and Pfizer boosters and third doses for some time.
According to the New Jersey Department of Health, those who are eligible for a third dose are anyone who has received two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines at least 28 days ago and is moderately to severely immunocompromised. For a full list of eligibility, go to www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations/immuno.html. Third doses aim to help protect those who did not build enough protection with a two-dose vaccination.
Those eligible for boosters include anyone 65 years and older, long term care residents, or those 18 years and older with underlying health conditions or workplace exposure who have received two doses of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines at least six months ago. The authorization also recommends that everyone ages 18 and older who received a first Johnson and Johnson dose receive a booster dose at least two months after.
Booster shots aim to help protect those with healthy immune systems whose protection has decreased over time. According to the CDC, people can mix and match of vaccine brands when getting a booster.
Preparing for Halloween
Geisler said that the Bayonne police have persevered despite the pandemic.
“The Bayonne Police Department remains committed to serving our community regardless of these challenges,” Geisler said. “Our officers have been on the frontlines of public service, along with fire, EMS, and health care workers, to ensure that our residents continue to receive the levels of service they deserve. We continue to experience low quarantine numbers within the department, and our officers are committed to serving our community.”
According to Geisler, the department is now prepping for Halloween: “The department will again add additional resources to the streets this year to ensure that everyone celebrates Halloween safely.”
Geisler’s tips for a safe Halloween include: Trick or Treating in familiar neighborhoods, utilizing a flash light after dark, staying on the sidewalks, crossing streets at corners, do not cross the street while distracted. He also asked drivers to slow down and pay attention for children. For more information, he said to go monitor the Bayonne Police Department’s social media pages.
