Throughout the years, EA Sports has introduced more passing techniques in its popular Madden video game series. And with the release of "Madden NFL 22," we're going to go over some of those techniques.
Instead of just throwing the ball to your receiver by hitting the button shown above their head, you can change how you throw the ball in a number of ways. There are the initial three, which all involve the button you press to throw to the receiver. These three are bullet pass, touch pass and lob pass. We'll go over how to throw all of those below.
Then there are an additional two that are easy once you know, but hard to figure out if you're just trying in practice mode. These two are low passes and high passes.
There are also a few other tips, such as attempting a pump fake or throwing the ball away.
We'll explain how to throw all of these passes on both Xbox (Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S) and PlayStation (PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5) consoles.

How to throw a low pass in Madden 22
- Xbox: Hold LT + The button over the receiver
- PlayStation: L2 + The button over the receiver
Throwing a low pass in Madden 22 just requires you to hold the LT button (for Xbox) or L2 button (for PlayStation) while throwing to your intended target. The low pass is useful in certain situations, and is often used on curl routes. Throwing a low pass means your receiver will go to the ground, so you have a very low chance of getting YAC by doing this. So if you throw a low pass it'll be in a situation where you don't want or need the receiver to gain additional yards. So two examples would be to pick up a first down, or to score a touchdown.
How to throw a high pass in Madden 22
- Xbox: Hold LB + The button over the receiver
- PlayStation: Hold L1 + The button over the receiver
Throwing a high pass in Madden 22 requires you to hold the LB button (for Xbox) or L1 button (for PlayStation) while throwing to your intended target. In other words, it's the same as a low pass, just with a different button. Throwing a high pass helps when your receiver has a height advantage over his defensive back. Although it doesn't completely stop your receiver like a low pass does, throwing a high pass will make the receiver pause in the air a bit since they need to jump higher to catch it.
How to throw a bullet, lob and touch pass in Madden 22
- Bullet pass: Hold the button over the receiver
- Lob pass: Tap the button over the receiver
- Touch pass: Press the button over the receiver
Telling you to hold, tap and press a button may all sound like the same thing, but they're all different. A bullet pass requires you to hold the button of your intended target until a pass is thrown. Throwing a bullet pass is the easiest of the three to conquer.
Throwing a lob pass is also pretty easy as you just quickly tap the button of the intended target. Lob passes are great for deep balls as they allow the receiver to catch in stride. Throwing bullet passes on deep balls can sometimes cause the receiver to stop.
Throwing a touch pass is the hardest of the three as it's in the middle. You want to hold the button long enough so it's not a lob, but let go before it becomes a bullet pass. It's a little tricky, but fairly simple once you figure it out.
How to throw a pump fake, throw the ball away & slide in Madden 22
- Pump fake: Press the button of the intended target twice
- Throw the ball away: Press in right stick on Xbox, press R3 button on PlayStation
- Slide: Double tap X on Xbox, double tap Square on PlayStation
Some other helpful passing tips in Madden 22 involve throwing pump fakes, throwing the ball away and sliding. All are really easy to figure out.
Throwing a pump fake requires you to double tap the button of the receiver you're faking to. I personally don't use pump fake often as I'm scared of getting sacked, but it can be effective. Throwing the ball away is even easier as you just press in on the right stick for Xbox, or press R3 on the PlayStation controller. However, you have to be out of the pocket to throw the ball away, otherwise you'll get an intentional grounding penalty.
Sliding with your quarterback changed midway through Madden 21. It used you be that you pressed the dive button, but too often the game would read it as a dive and your quarterback would end up fumbling. Now, you double tap the dive button and your quarterback (or other player) will safely slide to the ground. You can still dive if you want by holding down the button, but we recommend against it as you fumble about 90% of the time as a quarterback.
