LANSINGBURGH, N.Y. — Vaccination rates among young adults in Troy are sluggish and Rensselaer County and City of Troy leaders are calling attention to this issue and encouraging vaccinations.

Vaccinations in the Lansingburgh area are low, especially in the 20 to 34-year-old age group. Vaccinations in that age group in the 12182 zip code, which is mostly situated in Lansingburgh, are at 46.4 percent for one dose.

In recent weeks, county health officials have been seeing an increase in new cases out of Lansingburgh. Cases throughout Troy have been on the increase overall in recent weeks.

“There are a number of new cases coming from Lansingburgh in recent weeks, and the vaccines are slow in that age group. We want residents to be aware of that fact and the fact that vaccines are easily available,” Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin said,

“Our only path back to normalcy is through high rates of vaccination against COVID-19. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated at upcoming clinics available in Troy and Rensselaer County,” Troy Mayor Patrick Madden remarked.

The county has one dozen vaccination clinics across the county for August, including the use of the Vax Bus. County and city leaders said they are reviewing the possibility of adding more vaccine clinics, particularly in the Lansingburgh area.

The county has been partnering with organizations including the Capital District Transportation Authority for the county Vax Bus, a mobile clinic, and with Stewart’s Shops for pop-up vaccination clinics in various locations across the county. The Vax Bus appearance at the East Greenbush summer concert series on Tuesday was the most successful pop-up clinic to date.

“We want to help the community stay safe, and recognize that vaccines are a great defense against COVID-19. We have a number of events coming up and want residents to know vaccines can be obtained conveniently in the days to come,” Rensselaer County Public Health Director Mary Fran Wachunas added.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of Wednesday, Aug. 10, 58.3% of Rensselaer County’s population was fully vaccinated, 66.7% of the county’s 12+ population was fully vaccinated, 68.4% of the county’s 18+ population was fully vaccinated, and 86% of the county’s 65+ population was fully vaccinated.
