Ralph Klassen and Paul Bowman sit on the cannon that was displayed on the La Porte courthouse lawn in 1925. Both were in the Indiana National Guard. Ralph’s family owned Klassen Orchards at the corner of Orchard Avenue and Garden Street. Paul was a longtime mail route man and naturalist. (Note the horse and carriage in right background.)

The interior of Betz Cleaners contains a row of shoeshine chairs and advertises “Hats Cleaned Blocked.” Blocking a hat gives the hat its shape. Betz Cleaners was located at the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Lincoln Way, facing Michigan Avenue.

This Crown Cycle Company advertisement in 1895 states: “Crown Cycles Built by Crown Cycle Company, La Porte, Indiana, are High Class Exclusively.” Later, Crown bicycles were built by La Porte’s Great Western Manufacturing Company, an 1898 merger of four smaller companies, which continued in business until about 1920.
