Face off at Towson this coming Saturday, Feb. 20, is set for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast by the Lacrosse Sports Network and streamed live free of charge. At this current time, fans are not allowed in Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. This will be the first of six road games for the Blue Devils.
Joe Robertson Is Back
After 630 days Duke senior attackman Joe Robertson donned the Blue Devil jersey again in an official game. Robertson, after missing the 2020 season to injury, started at attack for Duke for the first time since May 25, 2019 and picked up right where he left off with four goals and an assist for five points.
He registered three goals in the first quarter, the 21st hat trick of his career, and finished the game with at least five points for the 10th time in his two-plus seasons. Robertson has scored at least one point in 30 consecutive games, dating back to March 24, 2018.
Fast Start Propels Duke Past Mercer
After getting off to a couple of slow starts in the first two games, Duke reversed the trend this past weekend, jumping out to an 8-1 first-quarter lead. The Blue Devils tallied eight goals on 13 shots in the opening frame, including scoring on seven of their first eight shots of the game.
Duke is shooting .391 after three games, ranking fourth nationally and second in the ACC behind North Carolina's .396. In the game against Mercer, the Blue Devils scored 17 goals on 35 shots for a .486 shooting percentage for the game.
Naso Continues to Shine
Rookie faceoff specialist Jake Naso continues to shine as Duke's top draw man. The St. Anthony's product has taken 83 percent (50-60) of the team's faceoffs in the past two games and has won 31 of them for a .620 win percentage.
Naso registered an assist versus Robert Morris while winning 19-of-28 draws and this past Saturday in the win over Mercer he scored his first career goal and won 12-of-22 faceoffs. Mercer's draw man came into the game winning 83 percent of his restarts and left only winning 54 percent. Naso has 16 ground balls on the year and ranks 13th nationally with a .608 win percentage.
Carpenter by the Numbers
Sophomore defenseman Tyler Carpenter had another solid outing against Mercer, causing four turnovers and scooping up five ground balls. In the past two games, the Durham, N.C., native has eight caused turnovers and 10 GBs. He ranks first in the ACC and second nationally in caused turnovers per game (3.00), while his 4.33 ground ball average is fifth in the league. He is averaging 3.27 ground balls and 1.64 caused turnovers per game in his young career.
Sowers Continues to Put up Numbers
Graduate student Michael Sowers continues to shine for the Blue Devils, registering four goals and two assists in the win Saturday against Mercer. The six-point outing was the 37th game with at least five points in his career, while his four goals marked his 25th career hat trick.
Riding a 50-game point streak, Sowers has 315 career points from 126 goals and 189 assists. He is one point shy of moving into the top 10 on the NCAA career scoring list and six points away from the eighth spot.
Speaking of the records book, Sowers needs 43 assists to break Pat Spencer's NCAA assists record of 231. His current average of 6.30 points per game ranks tied for third in the NCAA records book. To put his productivity into perspective, only six players in this century averaged more than five points per game for their careers

Nakeie Montgomery Having His Best Start
Senior Nakeie Montgomery is having a strong start to the 2021 campaign, ranking second on the team in points with four goals and four assists. The Dallas, Texas native can impact a game in a variety of ways – he can go one-on-one and score or he can draw a defense and find the open man around the crease. He most recently showed his incredible vision and dished out three high-level assists in the win over Mercer. That came on the heels of him scoring three goals and an assist in the fourth quarter to help Duke beat Robert Morris.
The eight points are the most for Montgomery in his first three games of a season. In 2020, Montgomery had six points as Duke started 2-1 and as a sophomore, he had three. For his career, Montgomery had 77 points (47g, 30a) in 46 career games.
Brennan O'Neill Quietly Putting Up Numbers
There has been much discussion about the talent Duke has on offense in 2021 and one of the top players talked about was rookie Brennan O'Neill. Tabbed the nation's No. 1 recruit, O'Neill has pretty quietly gone about his business and is tied for second on the team in points. He made his debut with three goals and an assist and added a pair of points in each of the past two games.
After starting at attack in the first two games, O'Neill made the move to the second midfield line as senior captain Joe Robertson returned to the field at attack. As a midfielder, he had a goal and an assist.
