How does Freefall Theatre keep its live performances safer?
Well, they built a drive-in.
It’s a tough time for arts organizations throughout the world, as the pandemic continues to make gathering in audiences dangerous.
But Freefall Theatre in St. Petersburg is using its open spaces to keep art alive with their “Theatre in the Park”ing Lot.
They started drive-in theatre last fall.
“They've been very successful for us,” said Matthew McGee, an actor and member of Freefall Theatre. “They have been able to get people out of the house to come see something where they know they're going to be safe because they're in their car.”

McGee’s return to song, dance and drag is the show he is in now – Scott and Patti: Get a real job!
In it he portrays Patti, a minor celebrity and stage mom turned cabaret act with her former child star son.
And, of course, they come to Florida.
“The show is part RuPaul, part Family Feud, part-Vegas show,” McGee said.
McGee says he feels a calling to entertain people going through a hard time.
“It's so serious, even though it's rather silly. I get dressed up in sequins and put on a wig and cover myself in cosmetics and – and look silly. And it does bring joy to people and that's super important for me,” McGee said.
McGee says Freefall will likely do more of these drive-in shows until they know it’s absolutely safe to go back into the theatre.
The show is running at Freefall Theatre through February 14, 2021.
